 Criminal procedure Code (Cr. P. C)  is the main procedural code of India  and it classifies
 every offence  in Indian Penal Code. Classification of offences India done by  Cr. P. C under following heads namely (1)Compoundable non compoundable (2)Bailable, non bailable (3) Cognizable, non cognizable. For better understanding of penal provisions and procedural law it is very important to understand these categorizations. These topics are also very important form academic  point of view as most of competition exams cover these topic especially cognizable and non cognizable offences.

Classification of offences in India.

Compoundable and Non Compoundable Offences Section 320 Cr. P. C

Compounding of offenses is provided in section 320 Cr PC .
In simple language Compoundable offences means the offenses in which the victim/complainant can enter into a compromise with accused and agree to drop charges against accused and drop the proceeding against him. In even simpler words the offences in which case can be closed when  complainant agrees to do so. 
Section 320(1) Cr. P. C Provides the list of sections compoundable without permission of court. 
Section 320(2)Cr.P.C Provides for Sections compoundable with permission of court. 

Non Compoundable offences are the offence which can not be compounded even if complainant wishes to do so. 

Bailable and Non Bailable Offences. Bailable and non bailable offences are defined under section 2(a)Cr.PC .
Bailable offenses are those offenses in which accused is granted bail as a matter of right. 
Non bailable offences are offenses in which bail can be granted or rejected depending  on judges discretion. In non bailable offences  bail is not a right of accessed. 

Cognizable and non Cognizable Offences. 
Cognizable offences are defined under section 2(c) Cr.PC  and non cognizable offences are defined under section 2(l) Cr PC 
In simplest of language it can be explained as offences under  which  police has power to arrest upon receiving information of offence without any warrant are cognizable offences these offences are serious in nature.  Offences in which police can not arrest with out a arrest warrant issued by court are non cognizable offence these offences are less serious or it could also be said these offences are less grave. 

The First Schedule- Classification Of Offences
Schedule first of Cr.PC deals with classification of offences in India.. Schedule first tells u whether a offence is cognizable -non cognizable, Bailable  - non bailable it classifies a offence. Schedule First is very important to understand classification of offences under I.P.C. The First Schedule is in two parts first part deals with classification of offences of Indian Penal Code I. P. C and second part deals with classification of offences in other penal acts. 

Therefore, In India offences are classified as Compoundable and non-compoundable ,Bailable and non bailable , Cognizable and non cognizable.we have tried to summarize classification of offences in India in this short ans summarized article.
